Preparation for the Sacraments

The fountain of sacramental life in the Church

This phrase is used in the Preface of the Mass for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, which this year the Church commemorates on Friday 1 July.

This expression describes how the Church understands the effect of the action of the lance thrust into the side of Jesus Christ whose body was limp on the cross to which he had been nailed.  In death Christ was giving life.

Reconciliation/Confirmation/First Eucharist

The children are prepared for 1st Reconciliation from the beginning of the 4th term and the Sacrament is usually celebrated on the last Friday evening in November.

Preparation for Confirmation and First Holy Communion begins in early March the following year and the Sacraments are celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in May.

The children’s sessions are held on a Monday evening at 5.30pm to 6.45pm at St Mary's school. Parent’s sessions are held separately on another evening in the week at the church.

Registrations for the programme are taken in mid-October and are advertised in advance through the School and in the Parish Bulletin.

Baptisms

Tauranga and Mount Maunganui Parishes jointly share preparation of people seeking the Baptism of their children who are aged 8 years and younger.

Prior booking for the course is not required.

The course dates and venue are also advertised in the Parish Bulletins.  Baptisms are celebrated in both parishes on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month.  In Tauranga, the Baptism ceremony takes place  at approximately 11.45am following the 10am Mass.  There are no Baptisms during Lent but can be celebrated on Easter Sunday.
